Rochon was raised in Torrance. She was the daughter of Zelma Staples (a nurse practitioner) and Samuel Staples (a businessman and graphic artist). Cerritos High School, Cerritos California is where Rochon completed her high-school education in 1982. Rochon earned a bachelor's diploma in broadcast journalism from California State University Dominguez Heights (CSUDH) in the year 1986. Her minors included theatre, sociology and theater. Rochon made a return to CSUDH during the 2016 commencement as a keynote speaker.

The actress played Ashley Magnus in the first and second seasons of the tv show Sanctuary until her character was written out. Her departure remained the subject of debate between fans, with many who wanted her to the show in subsequent episodes until the show was cancelled in 2012. Ullerup was cast in 2016 as Bree O'Brien for Chesapeake Shores. Ullerup was played by Maggie Thomas, Michael Thomas the estranged wife, in Asteroid: Final Impact (2005).
